Center for Adolescent Pregnancy Prevention

Center for Adolscent pregnancy prevention (CAPP) serves adolescents ages 11-24 with education and clinical services to prevent pregnancy and the spread of disease. CAPP has a low pregnancy rate that historically has been at or about one percent. In FY2006, no pregnancies were identified in teens under age 18!

Teens presenting to CAPP’s Health Services participate in an intensive sex education class lead by a registered nurse. It is important to establish definitions to enhance teen and provider communications. Topics include reproductive systems, sexually transmitted infections, contraceptive methodologies including abstinence, and dating violence.

Teens receive gynecological examinations including screenings for sexually transmitted infections (STIs). Treatment is provided for the teen and partner for positive STI results. CAPP participates in the Commonwealth of Kentucky, Department of Health’s Sexually Transmitted Disease Control Program, which provides medication for those individuals who do not have other access to diagnosis and treatment facilities.

Contraceptive management is available for those teens that chose to contracept. For uninsured teens, CAPP provides some contraceptives at reduced pricing. Monitoring of contraceptive compliance occurs every twelve weeks.

Confidentiality and trust form the foundation for CAPP’s success! Better than 90% of the parents or custodial adults know that the teen is being seen at CAPP. All teens are encouraged to discuss their actions with their parent or guardian.

CAPP’s fully licensed medical staff includes Nurse Practitioner, Registered Nurses, Phlebotomist and Physician.

CAPP staff and teens participate in research studies. Current studies include:

  • Exposure to violence and its effect on teen sexual decision-making.
  • Bone density post depo-provera
  • Impact of Wise Guys training on sexual decision making in males ages 11-17
