Center for Adolescent Pregnancy Prevention

Parents

Parents are important partners in preventing teen pregnancy!

Talking Points

  • Share your family values with your teen
  • Tell them that you want them to wait until:
    • adulthood, have graduated high school or until marriage to be sexually active.
  • Use anatomically correct language
  • Teach your teen and other children the correct time and place to use anatomically correct language
  • Assist your teen in setting goals
  • Ask how will a teen pregnancy effect your reaching those goals.
  • Discourage early dating
  • Encourage group outings
  • Be honest and available
  • This is not one talk but a series
  • Know your teen’s friends and their families
  • Warn your teen about predators
  • Dispel myths – yes, they are still around

“Momma, I did what you said. I did not let him kiss.”

Kissing does not cause pregnancy. Yes, some parents continue to tell this to their teens with heartbreaking outcomes. Sometimes parents tell their teens part of the truth about sex to discourage early sexual debut (onset of sexual activity).

Schedule a parent-teen workshop for your school, church, club or neighborhood to assist you with beginning these conversations.
